Thomas Magnum is a fictional character, the lead in the American television series Magnum, P.I., which aired from 1980 to 1988, and again in its rebooted form starting in 2018. The original character was portrayed by Tom Selleck.
Magnum is a private investigator living in Oahu, Hawaii. A former Navy SEAL and Vietnam War veteran, he uses his military skills and connections to solve cases, often unorthodoxly. He resides in the guest house of a luxurious estate owned by the unseen (initially) novelist Robin Masters, ostensibly in exchange for providing security.
Magnum enjoys a playboy lifestyle, frequently seen driving a Ferrari 308 GTS and wearing Detroit Tigers baseball caps. Despite his carefree demeanor, he's haunted by his past experiences in the Navy and the loss of comrades, leading him to grapple with complex moral dilemmas. He maintains close friendships with fellow Vietnam veterans Theodore "T.C." Calvin and Orville "Rick" Wright, who often assist him in his cases.
Jay Hernandez portrays Magnum in the rebooted series, maintaining much of the original's backstory but with some modern updates, like a change in how he came to live on Robin Master's estate.
